PEACE BY PEACE COTTON PROJECT (PBP) was founded in 2008. The project aims to include funding and selling items made using cotton grown in India, supporting farmers in transitioning to organic farming methods through Chetna Organic, a local non-profit organization, supporting local producers, supporting children in entering school, and providing aid with scholarships.
The project has supported roughly 15,000 farming families in transitioning to organic farming methods by 2019, and this framework, which links consumer behaviors in Japan with support for overseas producers, is also highly praised by parties related to international cooperation such as Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
YAGI participated in the project as board of directors in 2018 at the time of PBP turned into a general incorporated foundation in Japan.
YAGI became certified for internationally recognized standards such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) in 2006, to promote the distribution of eco-friendly cotton and supporting cotton farmers in India for a long period of time, and we now handle more than 350 tons of internationally-certified cotton annually, the highest volume in Japan.
We are engaged in two projects of our own, YARN PROJECT and SEED PROJECT. We fund cotton in areas targeted for support in India, and later, we purchase and spin this cotton into our own original PBP yarn. This activities have reached more than JPY 1.2 million of contribution income.
Areas targeted for support are listed, which provides transparency regarding the recipients and scale of support. In addition, we provide producers with training aimed at improving quality in exchange for donations.
YARN PROJECT operates in the field of yarns and fabrics, and SEED PROJECT focuses on traceability all the way to the farm. Furthermore, our initiatives extend all the way to purchasing products made using PBP cotton and delivering them to consumers. Through PBP activities, we are contributing to the realization of a sustainable society by inviting even more partners to participate in the future in order to support cotton farmers in India through the distribution of organic cotton with high transparency over the entire production process, from yarn through to finished product, and that is sustainable in the true meaning of the world.
